Travel Tips

In Barbados the camouflage material is prohibited; either in clothing or accessories such as handbags. Camouflage is strictly for the military and it is an offence for civilians to wear it or import it.

Please note that airport porters are ubiquitous and charge for transporting luggage between the luggage claim area and the street.

Also if you purchase drinks in duty free on the way to Barbados, keep in mind that non Barbados Rums are not allowed.

Visitors to Barbados are permitted to bring the following items into the country without incurring duty: 1 litre of potable spirits or wine (but not rum), 200 cigarettes (one carton) or 100 cigars or 50 cigars and cigarettes not exceeding 230 grams in aggregate.

All articles in excess of this exemption are subject to the relevant duty and tax.

Prohibited Imports

Foreign rum and matches, pornography, fresh fruit and vegetables (only if grown in or conveyed through certain areas; contact the Ministry of Agriculture and Consumer Affairs for further information) and articles made of camouflage material. A permit must be obtained from the Ministry of Agriculture and Consumer Affairs in order to import meat and meat products.

Currency Exchange

Commercial banks offer the best rates of exchange. The Barbados National Bank and a range of international banks each have an office in Bridgetown with branches in Hastings, Holetown, Speightstown and Worthing. Generally banks are open Mon-Thurs 0800-1500, Fri 0800-1700.

Credit/Debit Cards and ATMs

American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa are accepted in the resorts, but cash is preferred for customs duty payment. ATMs are widely available.

Traveller’s Cheques

Accepted by all banks and most hotels. Opt for traveller’s cheques in US Dollars or Pounds Sterling to avoid additional charges.
