Nigel ‘robbed’ of Barbados glory
BLACKBURN rally driver Nigel Worswick was robbed of a class victory in the prestigious Rally Barbados by a ‘bizarre’ ruling.
Worswick and co-driver Lindsey Pilkington were among 87 crews from 14 nations who headed to the Caribbean for the event where they finished 26th overall an fifth in class in their Worswick Engineering Ford Escort Mk2.
Worswick said: “After completing all the stages we were third in class but a couple of other competitors, who had missed stages and been given notional times, were ranked ahead of us in the final results.
“I was particularly sorry for Lindsey who did a brilliant job coping with maps that weren’t accurate, by our standards, and a road book that contained numerous errors. she deserved to win an award but was robbed of one by the bizarre rules.”
over 20,000 motorsport fans packed on to the island to watch the two-day event.
Prior to the start Worswick and Pilkington spent two full days recceing the stages and preparing pacenotes in preparation for what lay ahead.
Worswick has vowed to make the Transatlantic trip next year and said: “Next time we’ll have a service crew. We had to do everything ourselves, and the tight schedule meant we were always on the go.
“It was like a day on the old Lombard RAC Rally except for the heat and humidity!
“Fortunately the car ran like clockwork and I only had to change the brake pads.”

Call it a quirk of fate or a mere statistical curiosity but the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados remains a bridge too far for Team India.
By R. MohanThe great venue of the game remains one as yet unconquered by India not only because the ball tends to fly there almost as if all those people in the crowd asking for ‘da parfum ball’ are making them by sheer willpower.the most recent occasion was, however, not the nearest India has been to a win at the rocking venue where the West Indians have ruled in virtual monopolistic style, over India at least. In 1997 we were busy writing up fancy intros overnight to herald what we believed would be India’s maiden win there. A mere 120 were needed in the fourth innings and with a certain Sachin Tendulkar leading the team there was reason to believe celebrations were in the air.It was not the easiest of pitches but the target was so low a half-century by one batsman in that distinguished lineup should have seen us through. the first doubts came when we reached the warm-up session on the morning of the final chase. There was so much negative talk in the Indian camp we could not believe our ears. This was not a Test team that believed it was on the verge of making history.A lot of the negativity seemed to come from M.Azharuddin. for some reason he sounded most diffident about the chase. In his first major overseas tour as captain, Sachin was an inexperienced hand at the helm. like every other cricketer he wanted the honour but once given it he was far from certain. Hard to blame him because Barbados is probably the very antithesis of a place where the Indians can be comfortable in.the West Indian pace battery was bound to put everything it had into the first hour and it was a matter of manoeuvring past that cautiously. what India had to show was a crash of early wickets to surrender ground to Ambrose and Bishop. It can be argued that an attack consisting of Bishop, Ambrose, Rose and Dillon (he did not get to bowl on that morning as three were sufficient) is about two classes better than what the home side has these days with skipper Darren Sammy in as third seamer at a distinctly un-West Indian pace.At 32 for four, with Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar – they had made the fight back possible in the first essay in which India had squeezed out a lead – back in the hutch, the writing was on the wall. the collapse was sensational though not unpredictable given the mood in the camp that morning. Shot out for 81 to lose by 38 runs, India still hunts the elusive victory in the Caribbean den. maybe, it is destined not to come, especially after the late order batsmen managed to hold on after Dhoni’s boldest declaration to date.India’s wins came mostly at Port of Spain, the town with a very Indian feel. but in a season in which Team India broke through to win at the Sabina Park, which inflicts by far the worst memories on Indian cricket, it did seem a win at the Oval was on the cards despite the bad weather and some sensible West Indian batting in the first innings that kept the deficit to a manageable and meager sum.the disappointment that morning 14 years ago was shattering. instead of some fine prose heralding an Indian win, we had to hurriedly write off Indian batting. Sadly, Bridgetown remains to this day a West Indian castle India has not breached. It remains the last frontier because Team India has managed to breach the likes of WACA in Perth, which used to be world cricket’s most lively venue in terms of pace and bounce.
South
South Coast waters are not as calm on the south coast as it is on the west coast and hence it is great for water sports as there are always waves. Generally south coast is fine for swimming with the water only getting more dangerous if you move further east. There are red flags to warn you on the days when currents are strong and swimming in not allowed. There are also lots of bars and nightclubs on the south coast, so there is plenty of activity to keep you busy after dark.

One of the longest and widest stretches of beach on the south coast; this is also one of the island’s liveliest beaches. Quite a few vendors can be found here and the beach has public changing facilities. Waves are moderate, not too much undertow, and it is always a busy, active beach.

An isolated, wide sandy beach with coconut palms, Bottom Bay offers privacy and tranquillity. Even though this beach offers crystal clear waters and great picnic spot, swimming here should be approached with great caution, as the waves can be very strong.
Very popular local beach near Bridgetown, Brighton is an amazingly long stretch of beach with only minor breaks of rock or reef. The water is fairly calm during most of the year, although sometimes populated with sea urchins near the reefs, so watch out.
Paradise and Brighton beach are separated by a small stand of woods. This is another lovely, placid beach with virtually no undertow and calm waters most of the year. A wonderful place for swimming, the area also has some shallow rock formations which may be of interest to the snorkeler. It was the beachfront to the old Paradise Hotel, which has been closed for several years. There are public access entries to this beach.

Crane Beach originally a harbour, is considered by many to be one of the island’s most beautiful beaches, by the way Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous rated it as “one of the ten best beaches in the world”! The name “Crane” was derived from the large crane situated at the top of the cliff which was used for loading and unloading ships. If nothing else, this is a gorgeous beach. Remember to take a walk on the short path to the end of the cliff, where some unbelievable views are available.
Long Beach truly is a distance away from civilization, so a cab or rented vehicle will be needed to reach it and return. The beach stretches for more than a mile, a great find since it is little visited. There are few facilities nearby; otherwise, this is a fairly private setting. It is tranquilly fenced by some jagged bluffs. The bluffs are, in turn, dotted in scrub and grasses, and would provide a fun distraction if one were inclined to clamber over them.
Dover Beach lies at the southern end of the St. Lawrence Gap ‘strip’. A popular beach among south coast visitors. Although there are no strong currents in the area, the sea is quite active, but there are lifeguards on duty at the beach to ensure your safety. On the beach are several stalls where you can purchase drinks, ice-cream, snacks, T-shirts, snorkelling gear, sunscreen, sunglasses and much more. Of course St. Lawrence Gap is nearby for all your food and drinks, as well as shopping.
Enterprise/Miami is another fine stretch of beach, very popular among locals. Can get quite crowded during weekends. The waters are crystal clear and sea in this area is usually calm but occasional swells add a little excitement to swimming here. For your safety there is also a lifeguard on duty. Few vendors have stalls with snacks and drinks here. Beach chairs and umbrellas are also available.
The island’s top windsurfing spot on a south east, this long, luxuriously wide stretch of beach has medium waves, a lot of undertow and good ambience. The combination of consistent surf and steady winds make for great day on the waves. Never desolate yet never too crowded, the beach sees most its traffic from nearby resorts. You can also try your hand at a game of volleyball or beach cricket here.
