Crop Over, five week summer festival, is the Barbados’ most famous & colorful festival. The origins is traced back to 1780′s, time when the Barbados was world’s biggest producer of sugar. And at end of sugar season, there was big celebration to mark culmination of other successful sugarcane harvest – Crop Over celebration. As sugar industry at Barbados declined, so did Crop Over festival & in 1940′s festival was terminated totally. However, festival was revived at 1974 and some other elements of the Barbadian culture were then infused to make extravaganza that exists still today.
