Marshall questions Rihanna’s contract

The Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA) should say if it has a “confidentiality agreement” which shields details of Rihanna’s August 5 Loud concert and three-year promotional contract.

The call was made by Dale Marshall, Deputy Leader of the Opposition,  on Sunday at a meeting of the Barbados Labour Party’s St George South branch at the Drax Hall Resource Centre.

Marshall said it was “wonderful” when a country like Barbados could proclaim its stars but his query was not about Rihanna as a performer.

He said it was in the interest of transparency, accountability and legality and in keeping with the public’s right to know

REDjet gets green light to fly to Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago’s Civil Aviation Authority are “now satisfied” that the Barbados based airline meets the regulatory requirements including safety, new Transport Minister Devant Maharaj said in a statement.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar handed Warners Transport portfolio to Maharaj three weeks ago.

REDjet, owned by Irish businessman Robbie Burns, was launched in April and branded as “the Caribbeans first low cost carrier.”

But scheduled flights to and from Trinidad — starting from May 8 — were cancelled after then Trinidad and Tobago Minister of Works and Transport Jack Warner accused the airline of “lawlessness” in supposedly failing to acquire necessary permission. He also questioned the safety of its planes.

Maharaj said the wrangling between REDjet and the Civil Aviation Authority, which prompted a legal writ by the former company, was “settled on terms which are mutually acceptable to all parties” and REDjet would now benefit from Trinidad and Tobagos “open air policy.”

“We are certain that the consuming public in Trinidad and Tobago and the region would welcome a choice in air travel at this time,” stated Maharaj. “It is reflective of this countrys commitment to the region and to the development of our Caricom partners,” Maharaj added.

Rihanna’s love for the ‘c-word’

Rihanna’s not exactly PG — but who knew she was such a potty mouth?

The 23-year-old appears on the cover of British Vogue ‘s November issue, where the “We Found Love” singer reveals her fondness for the ‘c’ word.

“That word is so offensive to everyone in the world except for Bajans. You know African-Americans use the n-word to their brothers? Well, that’s the way we use the c-word,” Rihanna explains. “When I first came here, I was saying it like it was nothing …. until my make-up artist finally had to tell me to stop. I just never know.”

Despite her affinity for crude language, Rihanna doesn’t want to be judged by her stage persona alone.

“That’s not me. That’s a part I play,” she explains of her raunchy image. “You know, like it’s a piece of art, with all these toys and textures to play with.” (British Vogue)

Nigel ‘robbed’ of Barbados glory (From Lancashire Telegraph)

Nigel ‘robbed’ of Barbados glory

BLACKBURN rally driver Nigel Worswick was robbed of a class victory in the prestigious Rally Barbados by a ‘bizarre’ ruling.

Worswick and co-driver Lindsey Pilkington were among 87 crews from 14 nations who headed to the Caribbean for the event where they finished 26th overall an fifth in class in their Worswick Engineering Ford Escort Mk2.

Worswick said: “After completing all the stages we were third in class but a couple of other competitors, who had missed stages and been given notional times, were ranked ahead of us in the final results.

“I was particularly sorry for Lindsey who did a brilliant job coping with maps that weren’t accurate, by our standards, and a road book that contained numerous errors. she deserved to win an award but was robbed of one by the bizarre rules.”

over 20,000 motorsport fans packed on to the island to watch the two-day event.

Prior to the start Worswick and Pilkington spent two full days recceing the stages and preparing pacenotes in preparation for what lay ahead.

Worswick has vowed to make the Transatlantic trip next year and said: “Next time we’ll have a service crew. We had to do everything ourselves, and the tight schedule meant we were always on the go.

“It was like a day on the old Lombard RAC Rally except for the heat and humidity!

“Fortunately the car ran like clockwork and I only had to change the brake pads.”

Back to school…

It may be summer time, but school was in full swing last night at the Party Stand at Kensignton Oval for the annual Wadadah Back to School fete.

Hundreds of students of all ages, shapes and sizes came out representing their respective secondary and primary schools> They were decked out in their school ties, epaulettes, skirts, overalls, shirts, ribbons, bag packs and lunch bags filled with goodies.

The students were on time for school, starting promptly at 9 p.m. and unlike the norm, they were all huddled at the gate eager to get inside to get the lesson started. At the beginning of the night, the students limed and chatted with friends before the school bell finally rang and they all headed to the front of the Party Stand to get classes started.

Krosfyah, were the first teachers for the night and they taught their lesson well. The teachers should have been proud to see their students having such a good time in the middle of the party stand and even stopping to Poze for some pictures.

Next was principal Lil Rick, Ricky Minaj, who came and instructed his students how to work properly – not forgetting how to Jones and Wuk-Up.

During the latter part of the session, a fight broke out and sent students scampering. But, just like it is frowned upon in regular school and not tolerated, it was the same at the Party Stand.

Security moved swiftly to get the fight under control so the session could continue. However, by that time, it was after 3 a.m. and many students had begun to dismiss themselves from school.

Arch Cot colapse theory dismissed

A LOCAL geologist has dismissed the theory by a Canadian expert that vibrations from construction equipment caused the deadly collapse of an apartment complex at Arch Cot Terrace, Brittons Hill, St Michael, in 2007.

Leslie Barker, a retired Government geologist, told the Coroner’s Court yesterday that the collapse of the cave was a natural phenomenon which would have occurred with or without the vibrations.

Overseas expert Hans Machel had earlier testified to the contrary.

“There is no doubt in my mind this cave would have collapsed sooner rather than later,” said Barker, whose team conducted a study on the caves in the Brittons Hill area after the collapse which resulted in the death of the Codrington family of five. (MB)
