Barbados – A Catamaran Cruise Ranks Number 1 Among Barbados Activities

Your Barbados holiday only spans so many days and there is so much to do, from absolutely nothing to dancing until the wee hours at Harbour Lights on the beach. However, one activity takes center stage. It’s the must-do activity in your Barbados vacation: a catamaran cruise. Why does it rank #1?  let me count the ways:

1. you get to swim with Barbados’ magnificent giant sea turtles in the clear blue Caribbean Sea. nothing beats communing up close & personal with these beautiful, gentle, ancient creatures.

2. It’s a fabulous way to see the west coast of the island.  the cats take you to prime snorkeling areas to see coral, shipwrecks, the turtles, and stunning white beaches.

3. It’s a full day but not a long day.  you leave around 10 a.m. and return around 2:30 or 3.  Libations flow, you relax, you swim, you snorkel in the pristine Caribbean Sea. It’s pretty much a perfect Caribbean day.

4. It’s fun and yet not a “booze cruise” or party boat (unless you book it privately – then it can be pretty much anything you want).  It’s a great time for grandparents, families, and couples.

5. the boat has plenty of shade – or you can lie out in the sun, your choice.

6. the crews working on the boats are first-rate: friendly, helpful, engaging, and highly professional.

7. Lunch is fabulous! By the time you are served lunch, you’re relaxed, friendly with other passengers, and hungry from snorkeling. Lunch is a Bajan feast, so eat up!

8. you won’t get seasick. With the very wide double-hull, catamarans are very stable in the water. plus, the Caribbean Sea is very calm. I’m prone to seasickness but have never been bothered by it on a catamaran cruise in Barbados.

9. everything you need is supplied. Wear your swimsuit and bring a towel and sunscreen. You’ll be leaving your shoes behind; only bare feet are allowed on board (unless you have a medical reason for needing shoes).

Barbados Catamaran Cruises: Safety first but Fun’s a Close Second

I’ve never heard a bad thing about any of the catamaran companies in Barbados, but when asked for my personal recommendation, I mention Tiami because I’ve been on numerous cat cruises with them and each time the experience has been remarkable.

The crews on the boats are highly trained in safety and very kind. My aunt Shirley, who’s 80, has a bad foot; our Tiami captain told Shirley she was his girlfriend for the day and throughout the cruise he took special notice of her.  even though she was unable to get into the water, my aunt had a fabulous time. I wasn’t sure if her very good time was due to the glorious scenery along the west coast of Barbados, the gorgeous sea turtles she saw in the water — or the personalized attention she received.

Booking a catamaran cruise is the number-one recommendation I have for anyone visiting beautiful Barbados. happy sailing!

Flooding in Barbados – Stabroek News – Guyana

(Barbados Nation) Some areas across Barbados are seriously affected by the heavy rains being experienced today.

With Barbados under a flood warning until 6 this evening, residents in flood prone areas are asked to take the necessary precautions.

Many residents are reporting to Starcom Network that their homes are flooded out and they are in need of assistance.

According to Simon Alleyne of the Department of Emergency Management (DEM) several areas in Christ Church are affected including Wotton Terrace, Kingsland, Rendezvous, Silver Hill, Oxnards and Rockley.

Other areas threatened by the heavy showers include Brittons Hill, Long Gap, South Wildey and Bush Hall in St Michael.

Flood waters rose to over five feet at Wotton, Christ Church today, trapping several distressed residents in their homes.

Officials at the Department of Emergency Management (DEM) deemed the area one of the worst affected when persistent showers drenched the island for several hours starting from around 3a.m.

Residents in the close knit community, who are no strangers to flooding in the area, lamented that it was the first time since 1983 that the water had risen to such a high level.

Several young men from the district went from house to house in a small plastic toy boat and a small fiber glass boat, using pieces of wood, shovels and rakes as oars helping distressed residents secure household items and their vehicles and even ferrying some to and from their homes.

They also dived into the murky water removing grills from the drains and attempting to clear them – but this did not help.

Residents said it appeared that all of the drains were blocked and the water invaded several of the houses.

Roy Ward of the DEM hurriedly called for rescuers and reinforcements when he arrived on the scene around 9 a.m and saw the high water level.

Cheapflighters on holiday … in Barbados

John Barrington-Carver is our Head Of Corporate Communications. A long-time fan of Barbados, he is sharing his tried-and-travelled tips here:

East Coast surf … at Bathsheba

Barbados has one of the best infrastructures in the Caribbean and provides great sporting and relaxation opportunities, catering for those who just want to chill or those who want to watch or partake in sporting activities on land or water.

If you are flexible with your dates you should note that accommodation prices depend on the “Season”. High season is from 16 December until 15 April. the Christmas week can also cost a premium on top of High Season rates so it pays to check and shop around. Booking with one of the airline’s holiday sites or with one of the major tour companies is probably the simplest way to book a holiday in Barbados especially for a first trip to the island.

However, if you can be flexible and are prepared to consider alternative accommodation like self-catering apartments or Bed & Breakfast, you can save money which can then be splashed out on eating out and/or car hire. at peak holiday times the more popular restaurants and car hire companies need booking well in advance.

The people of Barbados are welcoming and polite. Beach vendors will respect you saying “No thanks,” but will appreciate an exchange of pleasantries. Politeness extends to the roads as well.

The island

The west coast faces the Caribbean and is called the “Platinum Coast” where the most expensive hotels and property are located as well as the restaurants aspiring to international reputations. the south coast also has great silver sand beaches and is where most of the popular hotels and accommodation are located along with a huge variety of restaurants and bars. the east coast is rugged and faces the Atlantic so is windy and has much rougher seas than the other coasts. It’s well worth a visit though – maybe combining a tour to Codrington College and St Nicolas Abbey, claimed to be the oldest brick built house in the Western Hemisphere.

ATMS … not on this stretch

Currency and cards

The Bajan (Barbados) Dollar is based on the US dollar; currently 2 Bajan to the US dollar and 3 Bajan to the British pound. the US dollar is widely accepted in cash and the pound to a lesser degree.

Visa and MasterCard are the main cards accepted in hotels, restaurants and shops as well as ATMs on the island. most of the banks have signs at the ATMs telling you which cards are accepted.

Amex cards are accepted by the larger hotels and tourist-type shopping outlets and car-hire companies, but smaller businesses will tell you they cannot afford the whopping 7 per cent fee we were told Amex charge.

No. 1 priority … swimming

Transport

Airport to accommodation – If you are on a package holiday your operator will normally provide transport to/from your hotel and the airport. however, I have, in the past, waited the best part of an hour for stragglers clearing customs and baggage. after eight hours in the plane and early starts to catch it you may want to consider going to the Taxi Marshall near the arrivals exit who will book you a cab and tell you the correct cost for you hotel. If you do this, please tell your hotel rep at the airport that you do not need the transfer.

Local buses – Government buses are blue, privately-owned buses are yellow, many of which have aerofoils on the rear roof. as this implies, the drivers like to drive fast so if you are of a nervous disposition take the Blue bus. both will cost you B$2 per trip, the adrenaline comes free on the yellow bus.

Route taxis, called “ZRs” (pronounced “Zed-Rs” and identified by the ZR number plate), travel to most points on the island. these small mini- buses can, at times, be crowded as passengers are generally never turned away, regardless of the number.

Car hire – best arranged well before your trip either via your tour company or the internet. It’s worth shopping around for the best rates. you will be required to show your current driving licence and will have to pay B$10 for a local licence. Personally I avoid the jeep-type vehicles. They have drop-head roofs but no side panels and it does tend to rain in Barbados at times. A yellow bus coming the other way (or overtaking you) in the rain will result in an impromptu soaking especially for the passengers!

Sun sets … on west coast

Food and Drink

Wine is expensive! Local beer is great and a favourite is Banks beer, a lager beer of 4.7 per cent alcohol. Depending on where you buy its costs vary between B$4.5 and B$10! the local rum is Mount Gay (pronounced “Mungy” or “Mungay”) which predictably carries much less duty than imported spirits.

There are supermarkets in most of the main centres like Bridgetown, Holetown, Speightstown, Warrens and the St Lawrence Gap area. Food prices are comparable to the UK. Roadside stalls sell fruits and veg, but prices are not displayed so you need to know what the supermarkets charge to ensure you are getting a local and not a tourist price.

Restaurants – you are spoilt for eating out choices. Your hotel will have a book with most of the island’s eateries described in it and if you talk with fellow guests or your hotel concierge they will know the latest places to go for a drink or meal. Be warned though, prices are often more expensive than the UK, especially if you drink wine. Think £70-£100 for two at west coast “destination restaurants” although there are many reasonable places to eat and drink especially on the south coast. Chinese takeaways are a bargain – more than two people could comfortably eat for less than £30.

Freedom in the World 2011 – Barbados

Capital: BridgetownPopulation: 281,000

Political Rights Score: 1 *Civil Liberties Score: 1 *Status: Free

Overview

As Barbados continued to grapple with the impact of the global recession, widespread concern emerged in September over Prime Minister David Thompson’s health and ability to remain in office. Thompson died of pancreatic cancer in October, and the new prime minister, Freundel Stuart, faced a sluggish economy and rising crime rate.

Barbados gained its independence from Britain in 1966 but remained a member of the Commonwealth. The Barbados Labour Party (BLP) under Prime Minister Owen Arthur governed from 1994 to January 2008, when the opposition Democratic Labour Party (DLP) won a clear majority of 20 seats in the lower house of Parliament. The BLP was left with the remaining 10 seats. despite this stunning upset, the new government led by David Thompson of the DLP did not break markedly from the policies pursued by the Arthur government.

During much of the summer of 2010, Thompson remained out of office due to an undisclosed ailment, and DLP member Freundel Stuart took over as acting prime minister. While Thompson returned to office in late August, many important economic decisions, including the new budget and several proposed judicial and other reforms, were delayed. In September, the government officially acknowledged that he had pancreatic cancer. Thompson died on October 23 and was replaced by Stuart.

As Barbados struggled to emerge from the economic recession, the government was forced to cut expenditures, freeze public wages, and shore up the country’s foreign reserves. Efforts to reduce the debt burden also remained a top priority. Barbados experienced its third straight year of recession in 2010, as private consumption remained low and the tourism sector performed below expectations.

Barbados has been more successful than other Caribbean countries in combating violent crime, though the crime rate in 2010 rose to its highest level since 2006. The drug trade remains an important problem for Barbados, as the island becomes a transshipment point for cocaine originating from Venezuela, while radar monitoring cannot cover the entire island.

Political Rights and Civil Liberties

Barbados is an electoral democracy. Members of the 30-member House of Assembly, the lower house of the bicameral Parliament, are directly elected for five-year terms. The governor-general, who represents the British monarch as head of state, appoints the 21 members of the Senate: 12 on the advice of the prime minister, 2 on the advice of the leader of the opposition, and the remaining 7 at his own discretion. The prime minister is the leader of the political party with a majority in the House.

Political parties are free to organize. Historically, power has alternated between two centrist parties – the DLP and the BLP. other political organizations without representation in Parliament include the small, left-wing Workers Party of Barbados and the People’s Empowerment Party (PEP), an opposition force favoring trade union rights and greater state intervention in the economy.

Barbados was ranked 17 out of 178 countries surveyed in Transparency International’s 2010 Corruption Perceptions Index, the second best ranking in the Americas after Canada.

Freedom of expression is respected. Public opinion expressed through the news media, which are free of censorship and government control, has a powerful influence on policy. Newspapers, including the two major dailies, are privately owned. Four private and two government-run radio stations operate. The single television station, operated by the government-owned Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation, presents a wide range of political viewpoints. Access to the internet is not restricted.

The constitution guarantees freedom of religion, which is widely respected for mainstream religious groups. however, members of Barbados’s small Rastafarian community have protested prison regulations that require inmates to have their long dreadlocks cut off while in detention. Academic freedom is fully respected.

Barbados’s legal framework provides important guarantees for freedom of assembly, which are upheld in practice. The right to form civic organizations and labor unions is respected. two major labor unions, as well as various smaller ones, are active.

The judicial system is independent, and the Supreme Court includes a high court and a court of appeals. Lower-court officials are appointed on the advice of the Judicial and Legal Service Commission. Barbados has ratified the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) as its highest appellate court. there are occasional reports and complaints of the use of excessive force by the Royal Barbados Police Force to extract confessions, along with reports that police do not always seek warrants before searching homes.

The government has taken some positive steps to address overcrowding in the prison system. In 2006, Barbados began an important and complex judicial reform process which would allow courts to remain open longer and hear more cases each year. however, reforms were delayed again in 2010 during Thompson’s illness and following his death. Authorities have made significant efforts to discharge prison personnel accused of beating inmates, but there has not been substantial progress in their prosecution. The death penalty remains a mandatory punishment for certain capital crimes, although it has not been implemented since 1984.

Barbadian authorities have been criticized for excessively restrictive migration policies, including the treatment of foreign nationals at airports. In response, Prime Minister Freundel Stuart’s government has agreed to a series of talks with its Caribbean Community (CARICOM) neighbors to address their concerns.

Women comprise roughly half of the country’s workforce, though violence against women and children continue to be serious social concerns.

* Countries are ranked on a scale of 1-7, with 1 representing the highest level of freedom and 7 representing the lowest level of freedom.
